On Thursday, March 7th, the Energy and Commerce Committee in the House of Representatives unanimously supported forcing a TikTok divestiture. The legislation now advances to the full House.
House Speaker Mike Johnson has endorsed the bill saying it’s “an important bipartisan measure to take on China, our largest geopolitical foe, which is actively undermining our economy and security.”
President Joe Biden says that he’ll sign the bill if it is passed by Congress.
What is the bill about?
The bill is about blocking TikTok in the United States if it doesn’t break with their Chinese parent company, ByteDance, within six months. If they don’t adhere to the wishes of Congress, they’ll be banned from web-hosting sites and apps in the United States.
This bill is really about not allowing China to continue to control our children. And it’s also about the millions of idiot adults who are on the app regardless of the fact that the Chinese-owned company can get all kinds of personal information from them and track where they are.
President Biden and Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer are still on TikTok.
Of course, politicians, especially Democratic ones like President Biden and Michigan Democratic Governor Gretchen Whitmer can talk all they want to about the app being dangerous… but they still continue to use it for their communications. Great role models, eh?!
Distraught teens are calling Congress.
Meanwhile, our children are so addicted to the app that they are threatening to kill themselves if it’s taken away from them. That’s when you have to ask yourselves – where have their parents been? Why have their parents allowed their kids to use the Chinese app for so long and for so often that they can’t live without it?
Reports are saying that Capitol Hill was deluged with calls from teens and kids on Thursday in opposition to any kind of TikTok ban. Some, including adults, are even being threatened to call Congress or lose their accounts. Politicians receiving the calls have said they’ve been told by the callers that they’re calling because, “TikTok told me to.”
TikTok using private info. to target users to call Congress.
Florida Congressman Neal Dunn’s office told the BBC these efforts just validate everyone’s concerns. His statement about TikTok said, “American phones were geolocated and TikTok users were locked out of the platform until they called their members of Congress. ByteDance weaponized the app against America, and that is exactly why the Congressman supports this measure.”
If TikTok is able to mess with people when they want them to call Congress, just think what they could do during an election, an emergency event or any other time they want to control the American public.
New York Democrat Ritchie Torres told the BBC, “I am deeply troubled by reports of young people calling Congress, threatening to commit suicide or otherwise harm themselves.” He went on to say, “The iron grip that TikTok has on the minds of young people is a profound public health hazard.”
TikTok fights back.
A TikTok spokesman says the legislation will “will trample the First Amendment rights of 170 million Americans and deprive 5 million small businesses of a platform they rely on to grow and create jobs.”
Sounds like the Chinese are just as good at gaslighting everyone as our president is.
