As the Biden border crisis worsens, new information on just how bad things are getting has come to light.
A lawyer representing juveniles in government custody, Neha Desai, told CBS a “staggering number” of migrant children detained at the Donna complex Border Patrol facility in south Texas face overcrowded conditions, with some held for as long as seven days. “Some of the boys said that conditions were so overcrowded that they had to take turns sleeping on the floor,” Desai said.
As of March 2, the Donna complex was holding more than 1,800 people, 729% of its pandemic time maximum capacity, which was designed for 250 people.
A massive increase in the number of unaccompanied minors entering the United States on the southern border has overwhelmed the government’s ability to process them. Authorities say approximately 9,500 unaccompanied juveniles were taken into custody after crossing into the U.S. in February. This marks a 21-month high in detentions.
With this increase in detained children, the government is working to expand it’s bed space which has been severely limited from COVID-19 social distancing restrictions.
CBS reports more than 3,200 unaccompanied children were being held in Border Patrol facilities. Nearly 1,400 of the juveniles had been held longer than the 72 hour legal limit.
