In 2022, Queen Elizabeth will be celebrating her historic 70th year on the British throne, which means it will be her platinum jubilee. This week, the British government announced how the Queen plans to celebrate this momentous occasion, and she’s really going all out!
People Magazine reported that though the exact anniversary of when the Queen ascended the throne is actually on February 6, 2022, the British government has decided to move the celebration to the weekend of Thursday, June 2 through Sunday, June 5, so that it can take place in warmer summer weather.
“Spectacular moments in London and other major cities will be complemented by events in communities across the U.K. and the Commonwealth, allowing people to join together in celebration and thanks at a national and local level,” the Department of Culture Media and Sport said in a statement.

This will be the first time Britain has had a public holiday to celebrate the Queen’s reign since 2012, when they marked her 60th year on the throne. On that occasion, there was a special service at St. Paul’s Cathedral and a concert at the palace in celebration of her Diamond Jubilee.
In 2022, a Platinum Jubilee medal will be awarded to people who work in public service, including representatives of the Armed Forces, the emergency services and the prison services. This tradition dates always back to the reign of Queen Victoria, who had an official medal designed to celebrate her 50th anniversary on the throne.
“Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee will be a truly historic moment – and one that deserves a celebration to remember,” the U.K. government Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden added in a statement. “We can all look forward to a special, four-day Jubilee weekend, when we will put on a spectacular, once-in-a-generation show that mixes the best of British ceremonial splendour with cutting edge art and technology. It will bring the entire nation and the Commonwealth together in a fitting tribute to Her Majesty’s reign.”
Queen Elizabeth, 94, has currently been on the British throne for 68 years, longer than any other ruler in British history. In her time as Queen, she has become beloved by millions of people all over the globe who will undoubtedly look forward to celebrating her platinum jubilee.
