As Dame Angela Lansbury of “Murder She Wrote” celebrated her 95th birthday on Friday, she spoke out to reflect on her “fortunate” life.

Lansbury told The Mirror that she would be celebrating her birthday at home with her family in California, as she remains in lockdown due to the coronavirus pandemic.

“What a fortunate life I’ve had the pleasure to be part of, doing the thing I most enjoy – acting and entertaining great audiences all over the world,” she said. “I feel fortunate indeed to be able to celebrate my 95th birthday with my dearest family here in California. I am fortunate to be able to stay safe and my heart goes out to all those who are suffering or have lost loved ones.”

Though she is turning 95, Lansbury has no intention of slowing down anytime soon.

“I’ve never been particularly aware of my age,” she said. “It’s like being on a bicycle – I just put my foot down and keep going. I never think of running out of steam.”

It’s been 78 years since Lansbury scored her first Hollywood deal when she was signed by MGM at just 17 years of age. She then scored an Oscar nomination for her very first role onscreen when she played a maid in the 1944 movie Gaslight. Throughout her decades long career, Lansbury acted alongside the likes of Elvis Presley, Elizabeth Taylor, and Frank Sinatra.

Lansbury also starred as Jessica Fletcher on the hit television series “Murder She Wrote” from 1984 until 1996. Since the show went off the air, she has stayed busy acting in a variety of roles on both the stage and the screen.

Lansbury’s husband, the British actor Peter Shaw, tragically died in 2003 of heart failure at the age of 84 after 54 years of marriage. Though she misses her husband dearly, she has tried to still enjoy life as much as possible in the years since his passing.

“I think I’m interested in every part of life – not just acting… my grandchildren, my life, cooking, driving,” the actress said.

In the end, Lansbury’s only regret in life is not spending as much time with her family in the past as she could have.

“Wanting to take the things that are dear and warm and loving – my family – and then having to do my job,” she said. “You can’t do it all.”

You are definitely making up for that now, Dame Angela Lansbury!
