Whispers of Donald J. Trump eyeing a third term have begun circulating again. Despite the pesky 22nd Amendment clearly stating that “No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice,” at least one of Trump’s most ardent supporters is exploring creative interpretations to extend his stay in the Oval Office.

Where is the gossip coming from? None other than crazy Steve Bannon, a former White House strategist and perpetual provocateur. At a recent Republican gala, Bannon floated the idea of a Trump 2028 campaign, suggesting that since the 22nd Amendment doesn’t specify “consecutive” terms, perhaps there’s wiggle room for another run.

Legal scholars, however, are less enthused by this imaginative reading of the Constitution. Anthony Michael Kreis, a law professor at Georgia State University, dismissed Bannon’s interpretation, stating, “The 22nd Amendment plainly says, ‘No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice.’ This isn’t remotely debatable.”

Yet, the allure of indefinite power seems to resonate with Trump and some in his inner circle. Trump recently told NBC News about the idea, “A lot of people want me to do it… But, I mean, I basically tell them we have a long way to go, you know, it’s very early in the administration.”

While amending the Constitution to allow a third term would require Herculean legislative efforts, Bannon still seems optimistic about the idea and declared at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC), “The future of America is MAGA… We want Trump in 2028.”

Despite all the cheerful chatter about a third term, this is basically just a troll move – and, true to form, the Democrats are taking the bait.
