When life begins apparently depends on whether you’re in the pew or in the courtroom when you’re dealing with the Catholics. Yes, it turns out the sanctity of life has a fine- print clause if you’re a Catholic hospital trying not to pay up.

In a malpractice case that could make even the most devout do a double take, a Catholic hospital in Colorado is arguing that a 35-week-old unborn child wasn’t a “person” under the law according to a report out of the website CatholicVote.

Why? Because it helps them avoid a wrongful death lawsuit. Yes – the same religious folks who preach that life begins at conception are now pulling a legal 180 when it’s their wallet on the line.

The case involves the tragic death of a baby in the womb at 35 weeks after medical staff allegedly failed to respond to signs of fetal distress.

But instead of defending their care, lawyers for the hospital decided to get philosophical, claiming that since the child wasn’t technically born, the family can’t sue for wrongful death.

Apparently “life begins at conception” is a flexible slogan – great for political speeches and abortion protests, but not so great when your malpractice insurance might skyrocket.
