In a move that has sparked national outrage, Oscar Eduardo Ortega-Anguiano, an illegal alien convicted of killing two teenagers in a 2022 DUI crash, is set to be released from a California prison after serving just 3.5 years of a 10-year sentence.
The early release has prompted swift action from the Trump administration, with federal charges filed to prevent Ortega-Anguiano from walking free.
Ortega-Anguiano was convicted on two counts of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated after a high-speed crash that killed 19-year-olds Anya Varfolomeev and Nicholay Osokin. Despite the severity of his crimes, California’s decision to release him early has been met with criticism from federal officials and the victims’ families.
U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli announced a felony immigration charge against Ortega- Anguiano, stating, “If the State of California will not seek the full measure of justice against this individual, the [DOJ] will.” The charge carries a potential 20-year federal prison sentence, aiming to ensure that Ortega-Anguiano faces appropriate consequences for his actions.
Border czar Tom Homan emphasized the administration’s commitment to enforcing immigration laws, saying to Fox News, “I guarantee you, if they don’t honor the detainer, we’ll have ICE agents outside that facility to take custody of this individual and deport him.”
