Ah, Michigan, the land of… well, not much, apparently. In a sea of states vying for the top spot in various categories, Michigan seems content to languish in mediocrity, barely making a blip on the radar of excellence.
Michigan ranks at the bottom – for just about everything.
According to the U.S. News & World Report’s “Best States” rankings [1], Michigan comes in at a dismal #42, a far cry from the upper echelons of statehood glory. The state is not only a loser in the “gold star” category when compared to other states, they are way way way down at the bottom of most everything.
While other states bask in the glow of their achievements, Michigan is left in the shadows, desperately trying to find something to boast about. Sure, it has a decent GDP of $659 billion, but when you compare that to its lackluster rankings in education (#41), health care (#29), and infrastructure (#41), it’s like slapping a fresh coat of paint on a crumbling house.
Education, health care, infrastructure? Michigan is not a leader.
Let’s talk education, shall we? While states like Florida strut around like peacocks, claiming the top spot, Michigan can barely muster a whimper at #41. And don’t even get me started on health care. With a ranking of #29, Michigan might as well be offering leeches and witchcraft instead of modern medical treatment.
Infrastructure? Forget about it. Are the damn roads and bridges getting fixed? It doesn’t look like it. With a ranking of #41, Michigan’s roads are probably more pothole than pavement.
We even suck in the “natural environment” category.
But hey, at least we’ve got a nice coastline, right? With the longest freshwater coastline in the country, you’d think Michigan would have something to show for it. Unfortunately, when it comes to the “natural environment” category, Michigan’s ranking of #30 leaves much to be desired in the metrics reflecting pollution threats and air and water quality.
WTF, Michigan?!
So, what’s the deal? Is it possible that having a Democratic governor and a democratic legislature has led the state to such a horrible decline? Yes, it certainly IS possible. With such an unwelcoming state, many are leaving and others aren’t coming to stay permanently. And who can blame them?
Democrats are dragging us down.
Once a state known for its automotive innovation, we now find ourselves using millions of taxpayer dollars to fund EV plants, some of which have ties to China. And it’s not like Gov. Whitmer or her merry band of Democrat friends even CARE if no one is buying EVs and that our infrastructure can’t support them. Nope, common sense and reality don’t matter when Democrats have political agendas to shove down the throats of the electorate.
So instead of Michigan being a leader in innovation, low taxes, freedom, business opportunity or anything else, Michigan is barely managing to keep its heads above water in any category that measures a state’s performance in serving its residents.
Opportunity? Yes, we suck at that too. The “opportunity” metrics take into account economic opportunity, affordability and equality within a state. We are only #27th in that category.
Maybe one day Michigan will rise from the ashes of mediocrity and reclaim its former glory but that won’t be happening until the Democrats are voted out of office. For now, Michigan just another forgettable state without much to offer.
