Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who is running for president in 2024 as a third-party candidate after leaving the Democratic Party, recently stated that President Joe Biden represents a more significant threat to democracy than former President Donald Trump.
During an interview on CNN’s Outfront with Erin Burnett, Kennedy argued that Biden’s actions regarding censorship and the weaponization of federal agencies make him particularly concerning. (You can see the full interview here).
Kennedy explains why Biden sucks.
Kennedy highlighted Biden’s unprecedented use of federal agencies to censor political opponents, citing his personal experience of facing censorship shortly after Biden took office. He emphasized that no previous president had wielded federal power in such a manner, alleging that Biden worked with social media companies to censor political critics and even denied Secret Service protection to a political opponent (him) for political reasons.
According to Kennedy, Biden’s actions undermine the fundamental principles of democracy, as they infringe upon freedom of expression and grant the government unchecked authority to suppress dissent. He stressed the importance of the First Amendment, stating that it serves as the cornerstone of democracy and that any government capable of silencing opposition poses a grave threat.
Trump who?
Despite Burnett’s attempt to draw attention to Trump’s challenges to the election results, Kennedy maintained that Biden’s actions represent a more significant danger to democracy than anything Trump has done.
Kennedy argued that while Trump’s attempts to overturn the election were also concerning, Biden’s systematic censorship and abuse of federal power pose a more insidious threat to democratic values.
Biden used his federal agencies to censor his critics.
Kennedy said, talking about Biden, “President Biden is the first candidate in history…that has used the federal agencies to censor political speech, so to censor his opponent…No president in the country has ever done that…”
Kennedy went on to explain, “The greatest threat to democracy is not somebody who questions election returns, but a president of the United States who uses the power of his office to force the social media companies, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter to open a portal and give access to that portal to the FBI, to the CIA, to the IRS, to CISA, to NIH to censor his political critics.”
Is Kennedy helping Trump?
Kennedy’s candidacy has been viewed as potentially aiding Trump’s reelection efforts, with polls indicating his presence in the race draws support away from Biden, especially with independents, young people and Latinos.
Trump himself has welcomed Kennedy’s candidacy, labeling him as Biden’s primary opponent and suggesting that Kennedy’s policies align more closely with the radical left, potentially siphoning votes away from Biden.
Kennedy won’t be swayed.
Despite ongoing debates regarding the state of democracy in the United States, Kennedy remains steadfast in his belief that safeguarding freedom of expression is paramount to preserving democratic principles.
Not believing her ears that Trump isn’t the scariest most horrible, terrible, repugnant, most evil man on the planet, Burnett asked Kennedy again, “So, just to be clear, you’re saying you could make an argument that President Biden is a worse threat to democracy than Donald Trump?”
“Absolutely,” Kennedy answered.
