The phenomena of the leftists cancelling things they don’t agree with is not anything new. We saw it when they got rid of Aunt Jemima – not just the photo of the Black woman on the bottle but also the name. It’s now “Pearl Milling Company.”
We watched as the left tore down statues of historical figures – even George Washington – because they perceive the people to be white racists.
The things that happened in our past are part of our history – some good and some bad. That doesn’t necessarily make them irrelevant or evil today. They are part of our “truth” – but truth, as I point out in another recent article, is not something that the left agrees with. The left has their own truth and what is acceptable to THEM.
We have also watched the left cancel men with their “Me Too Movement” and cancel cops with their BLM/George Floyd riots. And we have watched them cancel out our freedom of speech during the elections and the Covid pandemic.
Cancel culture is part of the left’s identity.
The phrase “cancel culture” actually exists because of the Democratic Party and their leftist friends who want everyone to be “politically correct” – only THEY are the ones who get to decide what that means. And cancelling our entertainment is another area they like to dabble in.
Right now, they are targeting “Blazing Saddles,” what Hot Air calls “a groundbreaking 1974 comedy from director Mel Brooks that featured a black sheriff in a racist town and had an abundance of politically incorrect, racially-driven jokes.”
The show now has a “trigger” warning i.e. a disclaimer for sensitive people who might go off the deep end when watching it. It now includes an introduction where TCM’s Jacqueline Stewart says, “You’re about to watch a movie from 1974 that many consider one of the greatest comedies of all time…”
Then she goes on to say, “As the storyline implies, the issue of race is front and center in ‘Blazing Saddles’… and racist language and attitudes pervade the film. But those attitudes are espoused by characters who are explicitly portrayed here as narrow-minded, ignorant bigots…”
Dumbo is bad.
Dumbo has also got a warning from the left that says, “This program includes negative depictions and/or mistreatment of people or cultures…these stereotypes were wrong then and are wrong now. Rather than remove this content, we want to acknowledge its harmful impact, learn from it and spark conversation to create a more inclusive future together. Disney is committed to creating stories with inspirational and aspirational themes that reflect the rich diversity of the human experience around the globe.”
Gone With the Wind is bad.
Then there’s “Gone With the Wind.” Before you watch that one, you’ll get a racism lecture too that says, “‘Gone with the Wind’ is a product of its time and depicts racial and ethnic prejudices that have, unfortunately, been commonplace in American society. These racist depictions were wrong then and are wrong today. To create a more just, equitable, and inclusive future, we must first acknowledge and understand our history…we hope watching it opens up discussion about the roots of institutionalized racism that are still prevalent today. To actively dismantle these systems, we encourage using all the tools available including close examination of racist themes depicted in this film.”
They will come after M*A*S*H and the Golden Girls someday.
I believe that there are still numerous movies and TV shows that may undergo censorship, editing, warning labels, or even cancellation in the future due to the left’s perspective deeming them as racist, sexist, homophobic, or associated with causes they advocate for in order to eliminate certain elements from our lives.
M*A*S*H, Three’s Company, All in the Family, Sanford and Son, Married With Children, Seinfeld, That 70’s Show, 24, Family Guy, Home Improvement, Growing Pains, The Golden Girls…Take your pick. They are all sitting ducks to be targets for the left.
