Lost in the story about Michigan Democrat Governor Gretchen Whitmer losing out [1] on a $100 billion semiconductor project is the fact that it was the FIRST attempt at sneaking a megasite into Eagle Township [2] in Michigan’s Clinton County.
The Detroit News came out with an extensive story that took a while to be written because their FOIA request took forever to be fulfilled. Finally, they were able to divulge the fact that the Whitmer administration had spent 15 months trying to lure Micro Technology to the Eagle Township tract of land near Lansing in Clinton County.
It was, as all of the Michigan megasites projects are, buried in secrecy with non- disclosure agreements and promises of money and support from the governor’s office, legislators, economic development corporations and businesses.
Luckily for Eagle Township, who was in the dark about the whole thing, “Project Copper” turned into “Project Yankee” when New York won the project when they offered more taxpayer money to Micron than Whitmer did.
But this big loss hasn’t stopped Whitmer, the MEDC (Michigan Economic Development Corporation) or the LEAP (Lansing Economic Area Partnership) from pursuing other companies to move in no matter how much Eagle Township residents in Clinton County don’t want it there [3].
The governor and her leftist buddies are calling the campus, which has no current buyer, the Michigan Manufacturing Innovation Campus (MMIC) and most of the property is on donated farmland that was gifted Michigan State University.
It’s land that is supposed to be used for farmland but MSU seems to think they can break the lease [4]. So where are the outraged farmers and environmentalists around the state? Where are the protesters holding signs? Why are only the Republicans and independents sounding the alarm on the possible destruction to the land and water when these big megasites get built?
No, Democrats AREN’T actually all that concerned about the environment when it comes down to it. They are fine with Whitmer paving over Michigan farmland with concrete, destroying wetlands and habitats for birds and animals and possibly putting the availability and safety of Michigan’s waters at great risk.
Residents of Eagle Township are doing what they can to stop the megasite from being built but they are behind the eight ball as the Michigan government has been working on this project for a long time – and they have attorneys, local officials and all kinds of high- powered supporters on their side – to literally BULLDOZE OVER Michigan’s local communities.
