Grand Valley State University in Grand Rapids is hosting five “unique graduation celebrations” designed to honor their diverse graduates. The university says they are celebrated annually to complement their regular commencement ceremonies.
Unfortunately, the youth growing up today, and those who are teaching them, are no longer interested in equality or having everyone in a melting pot and getting along together. The seem to reject everything that Martin Luther King Jr. stood for.
This new crop of racists are all about “equity” and segregation. They are about separating groups of people from each other to point out their differences.
They use the code words “diversity” and “inclusion” when they actually mean special treatment, intolerance, separation, segregation, discrimination, isolation, disunion and division.
Instead of just having a group of graduating seniors celebrating their accomplishments together because they all go to the same university or have studied the same thing, Grand Valley wants to make sure they have the “opportunity to come together and acknowledge Laker accomplishments in the spirit and traditions of our diverse identities and cultures.” The university wants to make sure that they are pulled out of a main group of students and separated into identities. And the schools, no doubt, hope that their students will continue along this path for the rest of their lives.
In addition to their regular commencement ceremonies in which I think everyone is invited but I’m not sure, the university is having an Asian celebration, a Black celebration, a Latino celebration, a Lavender celebration (LGBTQ+) and a Native celebration.
I’m wondering what happens if you are a gay Native American? Are you required to go to three graduation ceremonies? Two? Which identity do you disavow? Multiracial folks and those who are gender fluid are in a real quandary.
And what about disabled? Why don’t they have a special day? What about those who have epilepsy? Epileptics are COMPLETELY discriminated against and don’t appear to have any graduation ceremonies that they can attend. The home page of the university says, “This event may feature loud sudden sounds. Some lighting is used at the event that may be disruptive to people who are sensitive to light or for those with epilepsy.”
Someday the DEI movement will implode and those who are born after us will see it as the racist (and political) movement that it is.
Martin Luther King Jr. predicted it. He said, “Human beings with all their faults and strengths constitute the mechanism of a social movement…They must make mistakes and learn from them, make more mistakes, and learn anew. They must taste defeat as well as success and discover how to live with each. Time and action are the teachers.”
