I’ve been able, for years now, to successfully defend Donald Trump against charges of lunacy. Yes, obstinate, crass, and self-obsessed. But not out and out bonkers.

This yuletide, the jury is no longer out.

In his lost cause crusade, Trump said this last Friday, “So, with the revelation of MASSIVE & WIDESPREAD FRAUD & DECEPTION in working closely with Big Tech Companies, the DNC, & the Democrat Party, do you throw the Presidential Election Results of 2020 OUT and declare the RIGHTFUL WINNER, or do you have a NEW ELECTION?” Trump posted. It gets worse.

“A Massive Fraud of this type and magnitude allows for the termination of all rules, regulations, and articles, even those found in the Constitution,” the former chief executive continued. “Our great ‘Founder’ did not want, and would not condone, False & Fraudulent Elections!”

In case you didnt process that, here it is again, “…termination of all rules, regulations, and articles, even those found in the Constitution.”

That is over the top by a wide margin. Or, and this is a stretch, he is engaged in intentionally trashing his own brand for reasons so subterranean as to be nigh inscrutable. And, ummm, “Founder”? Just one?

“The Constitution is greater than any President,” Elon Musk said. “End of story.” Exactly.

The White House response was predictable, “The American Constitution is a sacrosanct document that for over 200 years has guaranteed that freedom and the rule of law prevail in our great country. The Constitution brings the American people together – regardless of party – and elected leaders swear to uphold it,” said White House deputy press secretary Andrew Bates.

And, “It’s the ultimate monument to all of the Americans who have given their lives to defeat self-serving despots that abused their power and trampled on fundamental rights. Attacking the Constitution and all it stands for is anathema to the soul of our nation, and should be universally condemned. You cannot only love America when you win.”

What hypocritical bosh. This is from the party that basically doesn’t believe in the First Amendment. This is from the party that has virtually called for a one party state. This is from a party that used the 14th Amendment to kill infants in utero.

Reasonable Americans are caught between these Bolshevik trash pandas and these populist blockheads. One wants to, in his own words, partake in “termination” of parts of the Constitution in his quest for psychological redemption. The other party is actively engaged in subverting the Constitution and has been doing so for decades. Conservative Republicans, the few remaining moderate Democrats, and Independents must fight these odious bookends. For this Christmas season the best gift we can give our country is to reject them and work for the political retirement of both.
