President Ronald Reagan gently mocked Jimmy Carter during a debate in Reagan’s 1980 successful run for the presidency. Every time Carter spewed another inanity Reagan would follow it up with, “There you go again.”
Well, in a phenomenon we’ve seen for quite a while now, Donald Trump seems pathologically unable to behave like a mature adult with judgment. There he goes again.
His rampaging ego takes him places politically sane men would not dare to trod. The latest rabid incident saw Trump trashing popular Florida Governor Ron DeSantis just before DeSantis’ landslide election victory and then, apparently petulant because of that victory and Trump’s own high-profile failures on Tuesday night, Trump doubled down on his earlier sad attempt at intimidation.
This was Trump trying to kill any idea of a DeSantis presidential campaign. It had the opposite effect. It reminded people what a childish buffoon Trump is and sympathy poured in for DeSantis. The takeaway? DeSantis is the future of the GOP, Trump is the past. Trump is almost Biden-like, an old man with no control of his rhetorical impulses. But he’s trying to hang on to power because his self-admiration knows no bounds. The latest chew through his muzzle incidents?
Trump said Wednesday, on his Truth Social, “Now that the Election in Florida is over, and everything went quite well, shouldn’t it be said that in 2020, I got 1.1 Million more votes in Florida than Ron D got this year, 5.7 Million to 4.6 Million? Just asking?…I don’t know if he is running. I think if he runs, he could hurt himself very badly. I really believe he could hurt himself badly. I think he would be making a mistake, I think the base would not like it — I don’t think it would be good for the party,” Trump said. Yup, Trump just can’t handle anybody else getting the slightest bit of the limelight. When that transpires Trump screeches, “Meeeee, meeeee, look at meeeee!!!!”
“Good for the party?” Was losing a winnable US Senate race in New Hampshire and the PA gubernatorial race, with Trump stooges as candidates, good for the party? Not to mention several House races we could have won. No wonder the Dems got serious ROI when they invested in Trump primary candidates across the nation.
Then Trump gets even wackier. “Any of that stuff is not good…I would tell you things about him that won’t be very flattering,” Trump said of DeSantis. “I know more about him than anybody – other than, perhaps, his wife.” Dear Gawd, what a creepy thing to say. And Does Trump really think punk talk from a real estate mogul is going to scare a guy who served in a SEAL unit?
Trump also said last week, in reference to a recent straw poll at a populist function, “There it is, Trump at 71%, Ron DeSanctimonious at 10%.” What is he, 6 years old? Apparently yes, as Trump sees the DeSantis bogeyman under his bed and feels the need to lash out. Keep it up pal, it’s only going to help the governor of Florida.
