The most important election in our lifetime. How many times have you heard that? And who has said it? Just about every election cycle, someone – or everyone – claims that this may be the most important election in our lifetime. And sometimes it feels like it is. It’s just a matter of perspective. The world is always on fire or ending for one political party or another.
Depending on what happens tomorrow, our democracy is at stake. Our very republic. Both sides think that.
In 2016, in discussing the election between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump, The Hill website shouted the headline “Why 2016 may actually be the most important election in our lifetime.”
Meanwhile, Reason declared 2018 to be “the most important election of our lifetime” and that we shouldn’t let Trump denialists from telling us otherwise.
On October 19, 2020, Vox declared the Trump v Biden election as the biggest thing ever. They said, “It’s the most important election in our lifetime and it always will be.”
That was after Biden had already tweeted to his mind-numbed robots, “There’s just one month left before the most important election in our lifetime.”
His pal Bernie also had said, “This is the most important election, not only in our lifetime but in the modern history of our country.”
Even Rush Limbaugh agreed. During a July 2020 monologue on his radio show, he said, “You know, I think a lot of language over the past 15 to 20 years has dulled the senses in that it’s been said of the last eight presidential elections that it’s the most important election in the history of the country or it’s the most important election of our lifetimes. And they’re saying it about this one. But, you know, it may actually be true about this one, but because it’s been said about all previous elections, a lot of people tune that out.”
He went on to say, “So we’ve never, I don’t think — I’ll have to check — but I don’t think we’ve ever had a presidential election where one of the major contending parties has as its objective to overthrow the Constitution of the United States and to rebuild America into something it was never found to be. That’s what’s at stake in this election. It isn’t about Donald Trump and his personality and his tweeting. It isn’t about Joe Biden and his 47 years in Washington. It’s about who’s really behind Joe Biden.”
And now it’s the midterm elections that we all have to concentrate in.
In July of 2022, MSNBC had a headline, from Joy Reid no less, “The 2022 midterms may actually be the most important elections of our lifetime.” She said it would determine if we have “free and fair elections again.” That’s probably true. Either we do – or we don’t if the Democrats remain in power.
Reid goes on to yak about insurrection and MAGA Republicanism. The Democrats are singing the same old tune about the end of the world when they are actually the ones currently destroying things with their progressive policies.
Biden is also singing the same tune as Joy. According to him, it’s the end of the world if the mega MAGA ultra Republicans take over. When he was at a Democratic National Committee rally in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on November 5th, he said it was “one of the most important elections in our lifetime…” and something that will shape our country for decades to come.
Yes, it will. That I will agree with.
