Could we be looking at three impeachments in two years? In Imperial Rome 69AD was the year of the four emperors. Galba, Otho, Vitellius, and Vespasian all ruled in that one year. Are we trying to give the Romans a run for their money?
We’ve seen over the last two years, left and right, that there are people who would impeach a ham sandwich if they could. Mmmmm…ham. As the left impeached Trump twice for absurd reasons, so there are those on the right who want to impeach Biden for being a cruddy president. While their hearts are in the trim, their brains and their constitutional knowledge are lacking. However, is the Afghanistan disaster an impeachable offense?
The constitutional limbo pole you’ve got to clear is, to wit: “The President, Vice President and all Civil Officers of the United States, shall be removed from Office on Impeachment for, and Conviction of, Treason, Bribery, or other high Crimes and Misdemeanors.” That’s in Article II, section 4 of the US Constitution.
Well, it doesn’t look like he was bribed into the bugout from Afghanistan. If you think so, adjust your tinfoil hat and ask the Venusians for more brain candy. But the other criterion?
Treason, as it would be an intentional act, is a stretch. Here Hanlon’s Razor comes into play. It states, “Never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by stupidity.” We’ve seen Joe Biden in action since last year. Whether by nature or by current mental dysfunction, this guy is not bright.
Think I’m being hard on him? Take a gander at his recent speeches. That is not a man in full command of his senses. Thus, if he’s in charge, he probably couldn’t have pulled off this particular treasonous act. Though it does surely seem, as he admitted recently at a press conference, that he may not be making his own decisions. Hence the muddle at the top during the Afghanistan disaster. There was likely no one in command at the top, just a rabble of uncoordinated politicians desperately reacting to events.
Now we come to “high Crimes and Misdemeanors.” Here we are on much more solid ground. Is it at least a misdemeanor to leave hundreds of Americans trapped behind the lines in a state run by terrorists? Is it a crime to skulk out of a military commitment without telling our allies, who were only there at our behest? Is it a high crime to leave billions of dollars of military supplies to include small arms, planes, helicopters, trucks, machine guns, and other vital equipment to a regime that has attacked us in the past and may do so in the future?
Yes, an emphatic yes. Thus the cries for impeachment will grow louder. This time, it could go past a mere House indictment and Senate acquittal. This time, it could stick.
