Florida has become more than a state known for its sandy beaches as Republican Governor Ron DeSantis has molded his home into a conservative utopia. Taking on COVID-19, Big Tech, and even the 2020 election itself, DeSantis remains a force to be reckoned with. And as if he doesn’t have enough on his plate already, the governor most recently signed a new law protecting women’s sports while at the same time banning transgender athletes from competing in the class they identify as.
On Tuesday, Gov. DeSantis was more than happy to announce his newest law as he held a press conference outside the Trinity Christian Academy in Jacksonville, Florida. Titled the Fairness in Women’s Sports Act, DeSantis described the bill by saying, “We’re going to go based off biology, not based off ideology when we’re doing sports. The bill defines a student’s biological sex based on the student’s official birth certificate at the time of birth.”
According to DeSantis, the bill does more than protect women and their right to compete at the highest level. He said, “Part of the bill we’re signing today, we’re not only making sure women have opportunities for scholarships and competition at the highest level, we’re also putting in statute ways to actually vindicate the rights of any women athletes who may be discriminated against.”
And as if the last couple of months haven’t shown the powerhouse that DeSantis has become, he also added a warning to corporations who believe they have the power to dictate laws. “In Florida, we’re going to do what’s right. We’ll stand up to corporations. They’re not going to dictate the policies in this state. We will stand up to groups like the NCAA that think they should be able to dictate the policies in different states. Not here, not ever.”
Knowing there will be backlash and even those who try to defy the law, DeSantis promised to do everything in his power to protect women and the strides they’ve made in sports. And for those who may boycott, DeSantis merely said, “If the price of that is we lose an event or two, I would prefer to protect our girls every day of the week and twice on Sunday.”
