Columbia University in New York is planning on holding 6 different graduation ceremonies that are based off of a variety of things including race, ethnicity, and income. The University does plan on holding a commencement ceremony that would be all inclusive.

The Columbia’s Graduation Registration website states, “Complementing our school- and University-wide ceremonies, these events provide a more intimate setting for students and guests to gather, incorporate meaningful cultural traditions and celebrate the specific contributions and achievements of their communities.”

The school plans to hold the following ceremonies virtually:

  • Native Graduation
  • Lavender Graduation for the LGBTQIA+ community
  • Asian Graduation
  • FLI Graduation for first generation of low income communities
  • Latinx Graduation
  • Black Graduation

Columbia University has not responded to any questions regarding their decision to hold separate ceremonies for select groups while omitting some other groups.
