It would have been easy to play to the mob. The baying multitudes would have covered him with a grateful film of saliva for keeping in jackboot lockstep with their cult of personality. But Senator Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, putting country before demagogue, in the finest tradition of public service and senatorial dignity, has reportedly indicated he supports the Trump impeachment for inciting the assault on the Capitol of last Wednesday. The New York Times broke the story.
Breaking NYT: Mitch McConnell has told associates he believes Trump committed impeachable offenses and that he is pleased that Democrats are moving to impeach him, believing that it will make it easier to purge him from the GOP.https://t.co/kqagCZzx6f [1]

FNC: “Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is furious with President Trump and supports Democrats’ efforts to initiate impeachment proceedings against him, a source familiar confirmed to Fox News. The source told Fox News that McConnell, R-Ky., is “done with Trump,” and has shared with associates that impeachment will help rid the Republican Party of Trump and his movement. It is unclear how McConnell would vote in an impeachment trial, should House Democrats vote to impeach Trump. It is not clear at this point whether McConnell would vote to convict.”
McConnell said last Wednesday, “This failed attempt to obstruct the Congress, this failed insurrection, only underscores how crucial the task before us is for our Republic. Our nation was founded precisely so that the free choice of the American people is what shapes our self-government and determines the destiny of our nation.” It was a hit on Trump.
McConnell slammed the mob mere hours after it attacked the Capitol, calling the Trumpians “thugs” and saying the Senate would not “bow to lawlessness or intimidation…The United States and the United States Congress have faced down much greater threats than the unhinged crowd we saw today. We have never been deterred before and we will not be deterred today. They tried to disrupt our democracy. They failed.” McConnell’s wife, former Secretary of Transportation Elaine Chao, resigned from the Trump Cabinet this week over the Capitol attack.
Nancy Pelosi continues to take advantage of the fire Trump started. “In protecting our Constitution and our Democracy, we will act with urgency, because this President represents an imminent threat to both. As the days go by, the horror of the ongoing assault on our democracy perpetrated by this President is intensified and so is the immediate need for action.” It brings to mind what Oliver Cromwell said to the Long Parliament. Someone should say it to Trump. “You have sat too long here for any good you have been doing. Depart, I say, and let us have done with you. In the name of God, go!”
