The world was stunned back in July when Kelly Preston, the actress wife of Hollywood star John Travolta, passed away at the age of 57 after a private two year battle with breast cancer. Now, Travolta’s former Grease co-star Olivia Newton-John is speaking out to reveal how Preston’s death keeps her going.
Newton-John, 72, was first diagnosed with breast cancer back in 1992, and she has gone on to battle the disease three times over the years. She is currently in the midst of a battle with stage 4 breast cancer, so Preston has been on her mind quite a lot since her death.
“John is my friend and he chooses to be private about this but he’s doing as well as anyone can be after losing their wife,” Newton-John told Fox News [1]. “Kelly, she was the most wonderful, beautiful, radiant mother and woman and losing her is incredibly sad.”
The actress and singer went on to say that launching the Olivia Newton-John Foundation [2] is her way of trying to make an impact in the ongoing fight against cancer.
“It really strengthens my resolve to do what I’m doing so I can find other ways to treat cancer,” Newton-John said of the passing of Preston. “We all want to see an end to it. So that’s going to keep me going.”
Newton-John is preparing to auction off over 300 items through her charity this month. These items include two Zoom chats with fans, memorabilia, awards, artwork and more. The auction will take place online starting on November 9 and running through November 30, with all proceeds going directly to the foundation and its efforts to fight cancer.
“That’s my dream. That’s my goal – to find different kinds of therapy for cancer and to see if we can get to a point where we can control cancer and live with it, like diabetes and other conditions,” Newton-John explained. “Immunotherapy is showing some promise, but ultimately we want to find treatments that don’t poison the body.”
This is the second time that she’s done an auction like this, and she made a point of giving a shoutout to the “wonderful man” who previously ended up placing a winning bid on her “Grease” jacket, only to gift it back to her.
“That was the most generous, wonderful thing,” Newton-John said. “He didn’t have to do that.”
