Meghan Markle Becomes First Modern Royal To Vote In An American Presidential Election

Over the past few months, Meghan Markle has been spending much of her time encouraging Americans to vote in this presidential election. Now, reports are coming in indicating that Meghan herself has voted, which means she’s made history as the first modern royal to vote in a U.S. presidential election.

A source close to Meghan and her husband Prince Harry told People Magazine that the former “Suits” actress “is voting in this election.” However, the source did not elaborate on whether Meghan voted early, or if she would be voting near her home in Santa Monica, California.

Another friend confirmed that Meghan and Harry have been keeping a close eye on this election.

“They have taken a keen interest in this election and I’m sure they are eagerly awaiting the outcome,” the friend said.

Entertainment Tonight [1] reported that back in August, Meghan celebrated the 100th anniversary of the 19th amendment, which gave women the right to vote, by taking part in the United State of Women’s virtual “Couch Party” titled “When All Women Vote.”

“When I think about voting and why this is so exceptionally important for all of us, I would frame it as: We vote to honor those who came before us and to protect those who will come after us,” Meghan said during the event. “Because that is what community is all about and that’s specifically what this election is all about. We’re only 75 days away from Election Day and that is so very close, and yet there is so much work to be done in that amount of time.”

“If we aren’t part of the solution, we are part of the problem,” she said, referring to those who choose not to vote. “If you’re complacent, you’re complicit. In the fraught moment that we find our nation, exercising your right to vote isn’t simply being part of a solution, it’s being part of a legacy.”

Meghan talked about the importance of voting once again in September, when she participated in an ABC special about the annual Time100 issue.

“Every four years, we’re told, ‘This is the most important election of our lifetime.’ But this one is,” she said. “When we vote, our values are put into action, and our voices are heard.”
