Freedom Has Been Challenged Before

Today, Sunday, is Remembrance Day across the Atlantic in the United Kingdom. The nation remembers the men who gave all to keep the land free. It is their Memorial Day. Here, now, this Sunday, we remember as well.

We remember when elections were free and votes counted. We remember when a free press reported and did not indoctrinate for the left. We remember when the political class could be, if not trusted, at least tolerated to do only moderate damage to the country. Those days are very possible gone, for now. Maybe, for a long time.

But we have been challenged before. The West in myth and in history has seen evils rise and threaten free men and women from leading their lives as enlightened liberty sees fit. During perhaps the darkest of those hours, as today, one man stood as a sentinel and guardian against those rabid forces.

The words of Winston Churchill in the spring of 1940, ring out as a clarion call of remembrance to us this day, “We have before us an ordeal of the most grievous kind. We have before us many, many long months of struggle and of suffering. You ask, what is our policy? I will say: It is to wage war, by sea, land and air, with all our might and with all the strength that God can give us; to wage war against a monstrous tyranny, never surpassed in the dark and lamentable catalogue of human crime…”

Churchill faced one type of National Socialist Party. We face another. “…Upon this battle depends the survival of Christian civilisation. Upon it depends our own British life, and the long continuity of our institutions and our Empire. The whole fury and might of the enemy must very soon be turned on us. Hitler knows that he will have to break us in this island or lose the war. If we can stand up to him, all Europe may be freed and the life of the world may move forward into broad, sunlit uplands.

But if we fail, then the whole world, including the United States, including all that we have known and cared for, will sink into the abyss of a new dark age…”

May we be worthy of the struggle, as he was.
