Over the summer, dozens of current and former employees came forward to accuse Ellen DeGeneres of turning a blind eye to racism, sexism, and even sexual misconduct on the set of her eponymous talk show. This shattered DeGeneres’ brand of urging others to “be kind” to one another, something that the 62 year-old host says at the end of every one of her shows.
Though DeGeneres seems to have gotten back on her feet after this scandal, she’s raising eyebrows this week after she started promoting a “Be Kind” subscription box for a whopping $270.
Page Six [1] reported that DeGeneres said that her box is “all about spreading kindness and highlights brands that do the same.” Items that are in the box include Wander Beauty eye masks and a BYCHARI “HOPE” necklace.
DeGeneres is trying to “be kind” to her fans by temporarily offering the box for $54.99 plus an additional $15 off with a special code. Kris Jenner, one of DeGeneres’ A-list Hollywood pals, was given the box for free. Jenner promoted the box on her own Instagram story, showing it off as she said, “So excited to get my new ‘Be Kind box by Ellen. This is so great.”
The matriarch of the Kardashian clan went on to say that the box also includes a “fabulous” picture of DeGeneres.
Staffers on the “Ellen DeGeneres Show” may not be thinking that she’s so kind again, however, as many of them have been impacted by Warner Bros. layoffs recently. A total of 17 staffers from Ellen Digital Ventures, which is the digital arm of the talk show, were fired. One employee told Buzzfeed News [4] that DeGeneres said she was “heartbroken” over the cuts in a call with employees.
“I obviously as am heartbroken as everybody, but we have to know that this is all for the good of EDV, and we need to keep this going because we have such a great team and we believe in y’all, and we will get through this just like we’ve gotten through all kinds of other things,” she told the remaining staffers.
“Know that we believe in you and I know this is hard for y’all to hear, and we are here for you,” DeGeneres reputedly added.
