Eddie Hassell, an actor who was best known for starring in the television show “Surface” and the 2010 Oscar-nominated movie The Kids Are All Right, was shot dead early Sunday morning. He was 30 years-old.
Hassell’s representative told Entertainment Tonight [1] that the actor was fatally shot in the abdomen outside his girlfriend’s apartment in Grand Prairie, Texas, at around 1 a.m. Variety reported [2] that the incident appeared to be a carjacking, but police are still investigating it at this time.
“The motive is still under investigation but detectives can confirm a car was taken from the scene and later recovered,” a spokesperson for the Grand Prairie Police Department said in a statement.
Police are asking the public for help in tracking down whoever was responsible for Hassell’s death. Anyone with any information has been told to call the Crime Stoppers anonymous hotline at (972) 988-8477.
After Hassell’s death, his girlfriend took to Instagram to pay tribute to him.
“You were dearer to me than all the bats in all the caves in the world, @eddie_hassell. I loved you more than the sky in Texas,” she wrote alongside photos of them together. “You made me more mad than anyone I’ve ever met, and I loved every ounce of you for it. Rest In Peace. You’ll always have my heart.”
Born on July 16, 1990 in Corsicana, Texas, Hassell had a successful film career throughout the 2000s and the 2010s. His most notable film role was that of Clay in The Kids Are All Right, which earned a Best Picture nomination at the Academy Awards. On television, Hassell starred as Phil Nance on NBC’s sci-fi series “Surface,” acting alongside Leighton Meester and Lake Bell.
Hassell’s other television credits include “Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip,” “Jimmy Kimmel Live!,” “Oliver Beene,” “Joan of Arcadia,” “‘Til Death,” “Southland,” “Bones,” “Devious Maids” and “Longmire.”
Aside from acting, Hassell loved surfing and skateboarding.
“Skateboarding’s been a huge part of my life, it also got me cast in commercials,” he told Elle [5] in 2013. “I was into horseback riding and rodeos in Texas and when I moved to L.A., I got into skating. I did all my own stunts. I’m into anything with a board: surfing, wakeboarding.”
