Back in July, fans were stunned when longtime “Dancing With The Stars” host Tom Bergeron was abruptly fired and replaced with the supermodel Tyra Banks. On Thursday, Banks spoke out to say that it was her mother, Carolyn London, who convinced her to take the job.

“They called me and were like, ‘Are you interested in this?’ This was earlier this year. And I’m like, ‘You’re calling me and asking me this? I would never in a million years think that I’d be asked to host,'” Banks said during an appearance on “The Late Late Show With James Corden.” “So it took me months. I sat on it for months.”

“I asked friends and finally I asked my mom. She was like, ‘Girl, I’m the first person that told you about that damn show! I told you to turn on the TV. The stars is dancing,'” Banks added. “She was the first person to tell me and I turned it on and couldn’t look away. And so I said, ‘Yeah, I think I can bring something to this.’ I feel like I made the right decision.”

Banks added that so far, she’s “having a really, really good time” hosting the show.

“It’s bananas,” she said. “I be changing clothes and there’s dancing and people flipping and going home.”

Before the show premiered last month, Banks discussed what she wants to bring to the series.

“I think it’s important to continue to make sure that younger people are watching the show with their older family members, that co-viewing, of bringing everybody together,” she said, according to Entertainment Tonight. “So I have some ideas on having a little popular dance mixed [in], we have some ideas, we’ll be testing that and seeing how people are feeling that.

“… [We’re] trying to turn it up a notch! But not too much, because the show is a hit,” Banks added. “I’m not coming here with a sledgehammer… that’d be dumb. So just adding some sprinkle pixie dust to it.”

Unfortunately for Banks, however, fans let it be known after the season premiere that they greatly prefer Bergeron as a host.

“#TyraBanks don’t quit your day job dear. Hosting DWTS is not your strength,” one user wrote. Another fan added, “I’m sorry but Tyra Banks is so freaking fake and annoying! why in the world would they replace Tom bergeron and Erin Andrews. She’s awful #DWTS.”

A final Twitter user commented, “Can I just say, what the heck was ABC thinking replacing Tom Bergeron with Tyra Banks on DWTS.  His wit and quick comebacks made the show interesting.  It’s so boring now I can’t stay awake.  #DWTS.”
