Rosie O’Donnell Recalls Visiting Martha Stewart In Prison

Rosie O’Donnell spoke out this week to recall when she visited Martha Stewart in prison.

O’Donnell told Page Six [1] that back in 2004, she traveled to Virginia to see Stewart while she was doing time behind bars for insider trading. While there, O’Donnell asked Stewart what she missed the most when she was locked up, fully expecting that she would say “My daughter” or “My dogs.”

Instead, Stewart responded by saying, “The flavor of lemon.”

“I would have known that I would have shoved one up my hooter, I could have got one in for you!” O’Donnell told her.

O’Donnell added that she personally arranged for a Capri lemon tree from Italy to be waiting on Stewart’s front porch at her estate in Bedford, Connecticut on the day she returned home. O’Donnell also said that she had found it heartbreaking when Stewart asked her to come visit her in prison, as the two women did not know each other very well.

“I didn’t really know her very much aside from the celebrity vernacular,” O’Donnell said. “She had done my show but I didn’t really know her, we hadn’t been out for dinner, we weren’t exactly friends. Before she left, I wrote her a letter that I thought it was so unfair and if she ever needed anything don’t hesitate and I left my phone number.”

“After she was in prison I got a call from her assistant who said she’d like you to come to visit and it kind of broke my heart to think that of all the people she knew she had to invite someone she sort of didn’t know to come all the way to Lynchburg, Virginia. I had to get a plane and go there,” the mother of five continued.

This comes as O’Donnell is preparing to host the annual gala for her charity “Rosie’s Theater Kids [2]” online on Wednesday evening. This organization brings Broadway to over 1,300 New York City public school kids, and even during the coronavirus pandemic, it has been working with eighteen schools and keeping students singing and dancing via zoom.

O’Donnell said that she understands that “it’s a gala in a time of crisis,” but she added that “everyone’s trying to do what they can.”
