Days after Prince Harry and Meghan Markle made a video in which they talked about the importance of voting in the upcoming presidential election, a Republican congressman is calling for Queen Elizabeth to strip the couple of their royal titles for “interfering” in the American election.
Daily Mail reported that Congressman Jason Smith of Missouri made this request on Friday in an open letter to Karen Pierce, the British Ambassador to the United States.
“Prince Harry and Megan Markle are using foreign titles to campaign against President Trump and interfere with our election,” Smith tweeted in a post that included his letter. “Today, I asked the British Government to put a stop to it.”

Smith explained in the letter that the British royal family is supposed to remain politically neutral at all times. He believes that Harry and Meghan are violating this by involving themselves in American politics.
“As you know, the British Royal Family has long observed a policy of strict neutrality in regard to political matters,” the GOP congressman wrote. “I am therefore concerned by the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s recent comments regarding the United States Presidential Election, especially given international conversations surrounding foreign interference in our elections and the Duke’s status as a guest of the United States.”
Smith went on to acknowledge that Harry and Meghan participated in the video as private citizens. However, he added that the fact that they still sometimes use their titles gave off the impression that their political statements were endorsed by the royal family.
“It is my view the titles and privileges they retain by permission of Her Majesty the Queen, given with the advice and consent of her government, prevent the Duke and Duchess from separating comments made in a personal capacity from their official position within the British Royal Family,” Smith wrote.
He then said that if Harry and Meghan are not stripped of their titles, the royal family will effectively be “condoning interference” in the United States’ election.
“Therefore, by allowing the Duke and Duchess of Sussex to retain their titles, and these political comments to continue, the British Government is effectively condoning interference in the 2020 United States Presidential Election from officials at the highest level of the British establishment,” Smith said.
He ended his letter by demanding that action be taken immediately.
“I respectfully request the British Government ensure The Duke and Duchess of Sussex no longer attempt to interfere in our election or be stripped of all titles, styles, and privileges which they currently retain,” Smith wrote. “I respectfully request you convey these concerns to both Her Majesty The Queen and to Her Majesty’s Government.”
Though Harry and Meghan have not officially endorsed Biden, past comments made by them have made it clear that they are liberals. Prior to marrying Harry, Meghan was an outspoken critic of Donald Trump’s during the 2016 presidential election.
“Yes, of course, Trump is divisive, think about female voters alone, right? I think it was in 2012 the Republican Party lost the female vote by 12 points; that is a huge number and with as misogynistic as Trump is, and so vocal about it, that is a huge chunk of it,” Meghan said in the 2016 interview. “You’re not just voting for a woman if it’s Hillary because she’s a woman, but certainly because Trump has made it easy to see that you don’t really want that kind of world that he’s painting.”
