Reba McEntire Announces She’s Hosting CMA Awards With Darius Rucker – ‘We’re Trying To Keep It Upbeat And Light’

It was announced on Monday that the 2020 Country Music Awards will be hosted by stars Reba McEntire and Darius Rucker.

Fox News [1] reported that this will be McEntire’s fifth time hosting the show, which is set to take place on November 11 at the Music City Center in Nashville, Tennessee. McEntire also hosted the awards show last year alongside Carrie Underwood and Dolly Parton. Meanwhile, this will be Rucker’s first time hosting.

“We both love to giggle and laugh and cut up. Whatever they give us to say, I have a feeling that we’re going to be adding a little bit of our own kind of sense of humor,” McEntire said in an interview with Rucker.

“One of the cool things about getting to do this with Reba is we can both be the straight man, or we can be the person who delivers the joke,” Rucker added. He went on to say that he has lots of fond memories of the CMAs, so hosting the show is a dream come true.

“When I started in this business, I was at my very first CMAs when I won the best new artist,” he said of his 2009 win. “I said to my manager, ‘I want to host this someday.’ I was joking. And to be here 14 years later hosting with Reba freaking McEntire? Wow!”

Though production of the awards show will be different this year because of coronavirus restrictions, McEntire and Rucker are determined to deliver an uplifting show full of music and fun.

“We’re trying to keep it upbeat and light. We as a country, we as a nation, we as a world, we need entertainment,” said McEntire. “I think people sitting at home in front of their TV screens or their computers, I think they want to see what we can deliver.”

Rucker agreed with McEntire.

“They want to hear music,” he said. “They want to see stars. They want to see collaborations they haven’t seen before.”

While there will be unique behind-the-scenes challenges this year because of COVID-19, McEntire has still promised to continue her tradition of multiple outfit changes throughout the show.

“Darius and I talked about that,” said McEntire. “He told me he’s gonna change clothes about six or seven times, so I am going to have to go eight at least.”
