An adjunct lecturer at Columbia University took to Twitter this week to launch a vile attack on the American flag, claiming that it is a hateful “symbol of genocide.”
Professor Anthony Zenkus, who is a professor at the Ivy League institution’s school of social work, responded to a tweet saying that the hammer and sickle “is a symbol of genocide.”
“[T]he hammer and sickle is a symbol of genocide,” the original tweet read. “What you gonna admire next, the swastika?”
“The American Flag is a symbol of genocide. Unless centuries of slavery and the vanquishing of Native American nations doesn’t figure into your equation,” Zenkus responded.

Zenkus’ faculty profile [3] at Columbia states that he was “trained by Vice President Al Gore as a presenter in his Climate Reality Project, and has been an organizer with Occupy Wall Street, the fight for a $15 minimum wage, and an ally in the Movement for Black Lives.”
The profile also describes him as an “activist on issues of racial justice, income inequality, and climate justice.” According to Common Dreams [4], Zenkus is a licenses social worker and an educator in social work who “trains judges, law enforcement, medical professionals, and educators on sexual violence and trauma.”
One user wrote on Rate My Professors [5] back in 2018 that in the classroom, however, Zenkus is more of a social justice warrior than a social worker.
“Prof. Zenkus is clearly passionate about what he does, but he comes off as more of a social justice warrior than a social worker,” the user wrote. “He is very idealistic and shares his personal view very openly. Check out his Twitter and you’ll see what I mean. He is very intelligent and I did enjoy taking his class, so at least there is that.”
Zenkus was added to Turning Point USA’s [6] Professor Watchlist after “responding to a conservative journalists [sic] comment” about an apparently pro-capitalism CNN tweet.
“Zenkus responded to the pro-capitalism tweet sent by the journalist by saying, ‘Odd how you forget the millions who died under #capitalism. The two world wars, centuries of slavery, and the genocide of native americans [sic]. Bet they didn’t think that was cool either,'” Turning Point USA explained.
It’s absolutely terrifying that this is the type of person who is shaping the minds of the next generation.
