Earlier this year, Prince Harry shocked the world when he stepped down as a senior member of the British royal family with his wife, Meghan Markle. Now, a royal expert is speaking out to say that since “Megxit,” Harry’s relationship with his grandfather Prince Philip “has not recovered.”
Royal expert Ingrid Seward told Vanity Fair [1] that Philip, 99, had “quite liked” Meghan when he first met her, but all of that has changed. These days, he reportedly compares her to Wallis Simpson, who had King Edward VIII abdicate in order to marry her in 1937. Seward also said that Philip is “unable to comprehend” why Harry would want to leave the royal family.
“His grandson’s behavior is completely alien to him, so not unnaturally the relationship has suffered,” Seward explained. She added that Philip “could neither understand nor relate” to Harry’s decision to leave the royal family, and that he was “deeply upset” by the choice.
Seward also said that Philip was “dismayed” by the way in which Harry and Meghan announced that they were leaving. It specifically hurt Philip that his advice to the couple on how to deal with life as royals had fallen on deaf ears.
The royal expert went on to reveal that Philip’s eyesight is failing and that he is now “very hard of hearing” in his old age. However, she added that he has managed to keep himself busy in lockdown by fishing, writing letters and reading.
“He also loves watching cooking programs. He loves Mary Berry,” Seward said, going on to add that Philip continues to make “a massive effort” and wants to “look his best” for royal appearances, saying that he takes hours to prepare. She said that he will get up “as early as necessary” to be at his appearances on time.
“He’s a proud man, he doesn’t want to be seen with a stick and would never consider a Zimmer frame,” Seward explained.
This comes weeks after Seward told Sky News [2] that Philip is “very, very disappointed” by Meghan Markle’s failure to “support the monarchy” and her husband.
“I think he’s very, very disappointed because I think he feels he gave up his naval career in order to stand by the Queen and help the monarchy,” she said. “And why can’t Meghan just give up her acting career, support her husband and support the monarchy?”
“As he used to say to Diana, this is not a popularity contest, this is all of us working together,” Seward added. “He just cannot understand why she couldn’t support Harry and help him rather than wanting to have her voice.”
