A Maryland man was arrested this week for threatening to kidnap and kill Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden and his running mate, Kamala Harris.
James Dale Reed, a 42 year-old man from Frederick who was “upset at the political situation,” allegedly threatened to kidnap Biden and rape Harris before killing both of them, according to the Baltimore Sun. He made these threats earlier this month in a letter that he left on the doorstep of a home that had Biden/Harris campaign signs in front of it.
“We have a list of homes and addresses by your election signs. We are the ones with those scary guns, We are the ones your children have nightmares about. The Boogeymen coming in the night,” Reed wrote, according to court documents.
Authorities managed to catch Reed after he was caught on security cameras leaving the letter at the home. He confessed to writing the letter as soon as he was confronted by police, and he is being held without bail.
Prosecutors said that Reed did not know the people who owned the home, and that he had planned to leave the letter at the first pro-Biden residence that he came upon. He reportedly explained to prosecutors that he was “upset at the political situation” adding that “this will happen…due to the political climate.”
U.S. Attorney for Maryland Robert Hur spoke out to say that his office takes threats of this nature “extremely seriously.”
“Conduct like this that threatens major candidates and fellow citizens only undermines our democracy and the principles upon which America was founded,” Hur said. “We will not tolerate threatening conduct that seeks to intimidate, harass or dissuade Americans from exercising their right to vote.”
Reed’s apparent Facebook page describes him as a semi-pro bodybuilder, and last week, he wrote there that his home was being searched. In the post, he blasted police as a “bunch of thugs and gang members.”
“I just got my house raided today and my stuff stolen from me because they felt that I was a threat to societee [sic] and I have made no threat to societee [sic] but they came into my house sees [sic] my property and stole everything,” Reed wrote.
