We previously reported that the California Supreme Court has ruled that the murder conviction of Scott Peterson in the 2002 deaths of his pregnant wife Laci and their unborn son Connor must be reexamined. Now, sources have come forward to reveal how Laci Peterson’s family feels about this, saying that they are “horrified.”
“This was a closed case,” a source close to Laci’s family told People Magazine [1]. “The family wasn’t moving on, of course, but they were definitely moving forward. Now they’re facing the very real possibility of having to sit through another trial. They’re horrified. They’re horrified and disgusted.”
Peterson was convicted for murdering Laci, 27, when she was eight months pregnant with their son on Christmas Eve in 2002. He then allegedly dumped their bodies in the San Francisco Bay, and it took five months for them to be found. Peterson was arrested after massage therapist Amber Frey came forward to tell police that she had been dating him since a month before Laci was killed. When they started dating, Peterson told Frey that his wife was already dead.
The California Supreme Court recently ruled that the conviction needed to be reexamined after finding that a juror committed “prejudicial misconduct” by failing to disclose that she had been involved with previous legal proceedings. Officials claim that juror Richelle Nice, who later wrote a book about the case with other jurors, failed to disclose to prosecutors that she had filed a lawsuit in 2000 trying to get a restraining order against boyfriend’s ex-girlfriend for harassing her while she was pregnant.
“Laci’s family is stunned,” the insider said. “This juror may be the reason that they have to go through this all over again. It’s a nightmare. They’ve already suffered an unimaginable loss.”
With Peterson’s future uncertain, Laci’s family is just trying to brace themselves for the difficult times that are coming.
“Right now, they’re preparing themselves that there may be another trial,” said the source. “They haven’t even begun to consider what they’ll do if he ever walks free again. It’s just awful for them.”
Peterson was initially sentenced to death for the murders of Laci and Connor, but this sentence was overturned by the California Supreme Court back in August. Prosecutors have announced that they plan to seek the death penalty again in Peterson’s case.
