Kelly Clarkson Reveals She Once Signed An Autograph As Carrie Underwood

On Friday’s episode of her eponymous talk show, Kelly Clarkson recalled the moment when she signed an autograph as Carrie Underwood after a fan mistook her for the country music star.

Clarkson revealed this while playing a game of “I’m Awesome At Being Awkward” with guests Michelle Buteau and Cheryl Hines. The game forces Clarkson and her guests to share what they would do in the most awkward situations.

“This girl came up to me and was like, ‘Oh my god, your song ‘So Small’ is one of my favorites,'” Clarkson recalled. “And I kept thinking, ‘I don’t have a song ‘So Small.’ And then she said another song and I was like, ‘Oh, you think I’m Carrie Underwood.'”

“And I literally look nothing like Carrie Underwood,” she added. “I was so embarrassed for her that I just…She was like, ‘Can you sign this?’ And I totally signed ‘Carrie Underwood.’ I think that might be illegal!”

Clarkson and Underwood are both former “American Idol” winners, with the former winning season one and the latter winning season four.

Hines revealed that she had once been mistaken for “Modern Family” star Julie Bowen, while Buteau said she’s been mistaken for Kim Coles and Raven-Symoné.

This comes months after Reese Witherspoon took to Twitter to reveal that a fan had mistaken her for Underwood.

“To the woman in the parking lot who just asked me if I was Carrie Underwood: You officially made my day!” Witherspoon wrote.

Underwood quickly replied, “YOUR day?!?!?!?! That lady just made my whole life!”

Though Clarkson does not look anything like Underwood, she did cover the country music star’s song “Before He Cheats” on her show last year.

After the performance, Underwood tweeted, “Saaaaaaaaang, gurl!,” adding in a fire emoji.

Clarkson is currently in the midst of a divorce from her husband of seven years, Brandon Blackstock. She addressed her divorce in the season premiere of her tall show last month.

“As you probably know, 2020 has brought a lot of change also to my personal life,” Clarkson said. “Definitely didn’t see anything coming that came, but what I’m dealing with is hard — it involves more than just my heart, it involves a lot of little hearts.”

Clarkson and Blackstock are parents to River, 6, and Remington, 4, and she made it clear that her children are her top priority.

“Divorce is never easy. We’re both from divorced families, so we know the best thing here is to protect our children and their little hearts,” she said. “I’m usually very open and I usually talk about everything, but in this case, I will talk a little bit here and there about how it affects me personally, but probably won’t go too far into it because I’m a mama bear and my kids come first.”
