The country music legend Dolly Parton brought late night television host Stephen Colbert to tears on Tuesday night during an intensely emotional interview.
While appearing on “The Late Show,” Parton was talking about songs that her late mother Avie Lee Owens would sing to her as a child when she broke into song, singing “Bury Me Beneath the Willow.” This moved Colbert, who lost his own mother Lorna back in 2013, so much that he began to cry. The seasoned late night host even mimed to someone off camera that he was getting “goosebumps.”
“Oh, you’re crying?” Parton, 74, asked Colbert between lyrics. “I better hush before you cry yourself to death and we can’t finish the show.”

Colbert laughed as he wiped away tears and told Parton, “Like a lot of Americans, I’m under a lot of stress right now, Dolly. You got my tripwire right there, I’ll tell you. That was pretty beautiful.”

Parton then talked about how music has brought her to tears at times.
“We used to cry when Mama would sing. Mama would cry, we’d cry,” she explained. “Those old songs were just amazing.”
“Isn’t it funny that sometimes there’s nothing happier than a cry?” Colbert asked Parton, who replied, “Yeah, I think that cleanses your soul. Water washes it out. That’s what it’s for, I think.”
Earlier in this interview, Parton opened up about how her music can sometimes bring therapy to others.
“I just feel like I can express myself in ways that I don’t need a doctor for, I don’t need therapy, I just sing it all out, write it all out,” she said. “I can write for other people too, like you said. Because I see things happen to other people and I think, ‘They don’t know how to express how they feel.’ They’re depressed or they’re sad, so I write songs for them as well.”
This comes after Parton shocked her fans by revealing that she’s in talks to pose for Playboy Magazine for her 75th birthday next year.
“Yeah, I just might do it. If I can do it in good taste and we’ll do it along with a really good interview inside,” Parton said earlier this month. “So, yeah, we’ve talked about it.”
