Don McLean, the singer and songwriter behind the hit song “American Pie,” spoke out to blast his ex-wife Patrisha McLean, who he was married to for nearly 30 years.
“I can truly say that my ex-wife is the worst person I ever knew,” McLean, 75, told The Irish Times [1] on Monday. “There’s nobody that compares.”
“All these love letters that she sent me every month for 30 years — they immediately turned to salt,” he added.
McLean married Patrisha in 1987, but they divorced 29 years later in 2016 following a domestic abuse incident at their home in Camden, Maine. McLean went on to plead guilty to domestic violence assault, a charge that was later dropped once he met the terms of the plea agreement. The singer and songwriter pleaded guilty to three other charges related to the incident as well.
McLean’s lawyer said at the time that he paid the fine “not because he was in fact guilty of anything, but to provide closure for his family and keep the whole process as private as possible.”
Patrisha fired back at her husband’s latest comments about her in a brief statement to Fox News [2]:
“There is a 10-year restraining order against my ex-husband for the 29 years of domestic abuse that he inflicted on me. The order stipulates that he cannot disparage me on social media. And it is unfortunate that the stipulation does not extend to media in general as that gives him the opportunity to continue abusing me as domestic abusers always do, always find a way to do, even when you manage to physically get away.”
Patrisha is the founder of Finding Our Voices [3], a non-profit whose goal is to raise awareness of domestic violence by sharing victims’ stories. While releasing a photo exhibition last year, Patrisha said it would be important to survivors because it was about “domestic abuse that we kept silent about for decades, and sometimes decades ago.”
McLean has said that he does not read anything that is reported about him because he does not trust the media “to give him a fair hearing.”
“Don’t read good things and don’t read bad things,” he said. “Because it’s all bulls—t.”
