Prime minister Edi Rama stated on Friday that Albania will be in line with the European Union regarding Israel and it will not move its embassy from Tel Aviv as requested by the U.S. president, Donald Trump.
In a letter sent on Friday to Rama, Trump wrote “I encourage you to join the United States and other European nations in moving your embassy to Jerusalem”.
Asked to comment the request, Rama stated that Albania is “the only non-EU member country in the region that has never voted against EU positions” on foreign affairs issues.
He added that it might change in the future, “but that day has not yet come”.
While Kosovo has already made clear its position by aiming to open its embassy in Jerusalem.
Kosovo’s Foreign Minister, Meliza Haradinaj-Stublla, said she assured her Israeli counterpart, Gabriel Ashkenazi, that Kosovo would do this “as soon as possible”.
The request on which Kosovo and Serbia agreed, recognizing Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, came as part of the document signed separately [1] by both countries at the White House, titled “Economic Normalization”.
