One hears the Democrats try to make great hay over the fact that some of the Euros and other second and third rate powers have shown a marked preference for Joe Biden in this year’s presidential election.
What the Democrats and many pundits, who are mostly badly educated and thus can’t draw on history for their analysis, can’t comprehend is that the attitudes of the Euros and the rest is perfectly understandable and should act as a reverse barometer when Americans are going to the the polls. Because just as President Trump legitimately puts America first, so do these other nations put their own countries first.
As these countries are our competitors, and sometimes our opponents, they naturally prefer a weaker American position in the world. That’s aside from our natural allies in the Anglosphere, Israel, Colombia, India, and some others who understand when we gain they gain. Those nations are tied to us by ethnic, historical, ideological, strategic, and economic bonds which is in their interest to maintain.
People who don’t understand national interest, the above-mentioned slow learners, never read Lord Palmerston, the 19th century British Prime Minister and Foreign Minister. He wrote, “Nations have no permanent friends or allies, they only have permanent interests…Our interests are eternal and perpetual, and these interests it is our duty to follow. Duty, Eternal, duty.” Exactly, with the current exceptions stated. Emphasis on current.
So it was no wonder that Barack Obama, who as president hated this country and did everything he could to weaken it, was a hit in Europe. The jaded old diplomats of the continent saw him coming from a mile away. He was an American masochist ripe for the plucking. The Iranians must have popped covert champagne when Obama was elected and they were proved right. They got palates of cash out of him and a nuclear deal they could violate at will. All these types don’t like Donald Trump because he is no anti-American patsy like his immediate predecessor.
And can you imagine what the Chinese, the Iranians, and the Euros will do to Joe Biden? Oh dear God. It’ll be a massacre, though everyone will be smiling and telling Joe how popular he is.
Yes, there have been times when America embarked on essentially altruistic crusades, much like the British Royal Navy did with the anti-slavery Wilberforce Patrols off the West African coast in the 19th century. Our outing in WWI was clearly an example. WWII and our victory against communism, at least foreign communism, are also examples. Though there certainly were American interests intertwined in both those actions.
Thus, if an American president is too popular overseas, be very suspicious. It’s because those nations, putting their own national interests first, know they can get over on the American. Once that starts an American president just gets more and more popular in places like Germany.
When an American president is not popular with the usual suspects, as Trump is not with the Euros for pressuring them to pay their fare share of NATO costs, then rest easy. He’s putting American national interest first.
