Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have found themselves in hot water this week after it was reported that their recent video in which they urged Americans to vote in the November presidential election was a “violation” of the deal they made when leaving the royal family. This has reportedly prompted discussions about stripping the two of their royal titles.
The Sunday Times [1] reported that members of the British royal family are meant to remain politically neutral at all times. When leaving the royal family earlier this year, Meghan and Harry pledged that “everything they do will uphold the values of Her Majesty.”
“The [royal] family are all wringing their hands, thinking: where is this going and does this abide by the deal to uphold the values of the Queen?” a royal aide said. “The feeling is it’s a violation of the agreement.”
This came after Meghan and Harry participated in video in which they talked about the importance of voting.
“We’re just six weeks out from Election Day, and today is National Voter Registration Day. Every four years, we are told the same thing, that ‘This is the most important election of our lifetime,'” Meghan said. “But this one is. When we vote, our values are put into action and our voices are heard. Your voice is a reminder that you matter. Because you do. And you deserve to be heard.”
“As we approach this November, it’s vital that we reject hate speech, misinformation and online negativity,” Harry said, with his wife adding, “So as we work to re-imagine the world around us, let’s challenge ourselves to build communities of compassion.”

Though Buckingham Palace subsequently released a statement saying that “any comments made by Prince Harry are made in a personal capacity,” sources said that the royal household was embarrassed by the comments.
“If Trump is re-elected and makes another visit here, what is the Queen supposed to say when her grandson and his wife have effectively campaigned against him?” one source said.
In the wake of this, the option of stripping Harry and Meghan of their titles is reportedly on the table.
“The view at the moment is that you can’t do that to Harry,” one royal aide said. “Even Edward VIII kept his [His Royal Highness] when he abdicated … [but] there is a strong view that the family really does need to put more distance between them and Harry and Meghan.”
