Country music star Keith Urban just spoke out to praise his wife, Hollywood actress Nicole Kidman, while also opening up about his decision to get sober for the sake of their marriage.
Soon after Urban and Kidman got married in June of 2006, she staged an intervention for him, and he checked himself into rehab immediately. Fourteen years later, Urban has no regrets about changing his life for the sake of his marriage.
“She’s just the one. She’s the one that I was searching for my whole life, and everything not only changed but had to change in me if I was gonna go that road,” Urban said of Kidman while appearing on Dax Shepard and Monica Padman’s “Armchair Expert [1]” podcast.
“It was like the ultimate fork in the road moment in my life and it was literally like you either get this right now or you are never, ever gonna get it right. This is your one shot,” he added. “It felt so obvious. I knew where I was going … [My marriage] was everything I was looking for and then beyond. Just beyond.”
Shepard chimed in to ask if egos ever get in the way of their marriage, given how successful Kidman and Urban are in their respective industries. Urban, however, said that this has never been an issue for them.
“There’s so many other things that I can bring that help and blossom the family, and protect it, and take care of it and grow it, not just fiscally,” he replied. “I bring everything I can most of the time.”
Since their marriage, Urban and Kidman have become parents to two daughters: Sunday Rose, 12, and Faith Margaret, 9. They celebrated their fourteenth wedding anniversary back in June of this year.
This comes months after Kidman opened up about her marriage and family life, explaining that they always try to have one parent at home to be with their girls. She added that she’ll even “pass on films” to be with her daughters if Urban is going to be away performing on tour.
“We have a system worked out to keep the family together,” Kidman explained. “When Keith’s not touring, it’s much easier. He’ll be on tour next year, and then I just don’t work as much. Literally — it will become imbalanced, and we will change it. We don’t have the answers, but the one thing we do know is that we will not jeopardize us.”
