Trump Envoy Grenell Announces Another Kosovo-Serbia White House Summit

The leaders of Kosovo and Serbia will meet at the White House for negotiations on September 2, 2020.

U.S. President Donald Trump envoy Richard Grenell announced the news on Friday.

It comes after a previous summit to resume the stalled dialogue, scheduled for June 27, was postponed due to the publication of war crime indictments that included President Hashim Thaci of Kosovo, while he was on the way to the White House.

The publication of indictments was followed by the dialogue resumption under EU leadership.

Prime Minister of Kosovo Avdullah Hoti and Serbia President Aleksandar Vucic met once and appointed negotiators to move on with technical issues.

However, the main issue of Kosovo recognition remains out of negotiations. While Kosovo claims it’s advancing the dialogue exclusively for mutual recognition, Serbia categorically denies it could ever discuss recognizing the country.

Kosovo has recently requested the U.S. involvement in the dialogue.

Grenell’s announcement comes on the same day with President Trump announcing a deal between Israel and the UAE branded “historic”.

The postponed White House summit was planned to focus on economic issues. It’s not clear what the content of September 2 negotiations will be. It also remains unknown whether the summit was coordinated with the EU.
