The New York Times created quite an International stir recently by claiming U.S. ‘intelligence sources’ leaked Russia has been paying the Taliban ‘bounty’ for the contract killing of NATO personal in Afghanistan. The NYT also claimed The White House has been fully briefed on the situation for months and has done nothing.
White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany confirmed that neither Vice President Pence or President Trump had been briefed on the alleged intelligence.
“The United States receives thousands of intelligence reports a day, and they are subject to strict scrutiny…While the White House does not routinely comment on alleged intelligence or internal deliberations, the CIA Director, National Security Advisor, and the Chief of Staff can all confirm that neither the President nor the Vice President were briefed on the alleged Russian bounty intelligence…This does not speak to the merit of the alleged intelligence but to the inaccuracy of the New York Times story erroneously suggesting that President Trump was briefed on this matter.”
For what’s its worth, the Taliban and the Kremlin denied the allegations and called it ‘fake news’.
“We have paid attention to another piece of fake news, launched in the media space by the American intelligence community, about alleged involvement of Russia’s military intelligence unit in contract killings of US troops in Afghanistan. That unpretentious fake clearly demonstrates low intellectual abilities of US intelligence propagandists who have to invent such nonsense instead of devising something more credible. Nevertheless, what else could be expected from the intelligence agency that has failed miserably in the 20-year-long war in Afghanistan,” the Russian foreign ministry noted, reported Russian state news agency TASS.
“Should we speak about facts – moreover, well-known [facts], it has not long been a secret in Afghanistan that members of the US intelligence community are involved in drug trafficking, cash payments to militants for letting transport convoys pass through, kickbacks from contracts implementing various projects paid by American taxpayers. The list of their actions can be continued if you want,” the ministry said.
“We categorically reject the notion of ever planning or carrying out targeted attacks against US or foreign forces at the behest of foreign intelligence or for the sake of collecting bounty, and we also reject receiving material support,” a Taliban statement said.
