BREAKING NEWS: New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio announced today that he will begin the process of defunding the police by moving “resources from the NYPD to youth and social services as part of our City’s budget.”
The announcement, which the mayor made on Twitter, comes as protesters continue to flood New York City to demand justice for George Floyd.
This morning we committed to move resources from the NYPD to youth and social services as part of our City’s budget.
Our young people need to be reached, not policed.
We can do this AND keep our city safe.

Critics of the idea point out that upper income earners would simply hire private security–while lower income earners and communities of color would largely be left without protection.
