According to Axios, Facebook purchased the popular meme generator, Giphy, for approximately $400 million.
The reason why this is a red flag to many is that Facebook is also launching “Hateful Memes Challenge.” The mission is not to create the best hateful meme for cash prizes; researchers are competing for $100,000 to develop an AI that can “successfully detect — hateful memes.”

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN TO YOU?
Let’s look at the fact-checking system. So-called experts chosen by Facebook sift through the online post, and if they don’t like a story, they classify it as “partly false” or “false,” even if it is an opinion piece. Your memes will now be in that category, and you could lose your redistribution reach or Facebook page in the process.
[AI.Facebook] In order for AI to become a more effective tool for detecting hate speech, it must be able to understand content the way people do: holistically. When viewing a meme, for example, we don’t think about the words and photo independently of each other; we understand the combined meaning together. This is extremely challenging for machines, however, because it means they can’t just analyze the text and the image separately.
They must combine these different modalities and understand how the meaning changes when they are presented together. To catalyze research in this area, Facebook AI has created a data set to help build systems that better understand multimodal hate speech. Today, we are releasing this Hateful Memes data set to the broader research community and launching an associated competition, hosted by DrivenData with a $100,000 prize pool.
WHAT’S BEHIND THE CURTAIN?
Facebook is quietly gaining control over the world’s biggest repository of memes and gifs, and their power to control and censor content on the Internet is going to be off the scales. They are essentially creating their God universe and are probably laughing about it at the expense of everyday Americans who just want to connect with another person.
According to reports, Facebook admits it’s struggling to meet the “powers that be” unrealistically high standards for banishing “hate speech” (you know, alternative speech from the left’s mainstream that helps individuals make informed decisions).

FACEBOOK IS ENDING ITSELF
The problem with trying to computerize political correctness is that pc isn’t fair, consistent, or rational. It pretends to be about equality and fairness. Still, there is a lot of real contempt and hatred for the out-group(s) of the moment at its core, and the essence of PC lies in the speaker’s being on the right side of this contempt and hatred to preen his moral superiority. In the real world, PC devolves into a highly biased and subjective form of attacking that which was formerly considered suitable or desirable and celebrating that which was previously regarded as harmful or undesirable.
These definitions can frequently change, for reasons that are also not consistent or rational, and many of them are only vaguely or subconsciously understood to begin with. PC is essentially a form of highly situational polemic about perceived virtues and vices, which is very hard to write a software program for.
Example of pc thinking: Minorities should be given preference over whites in college admissions, because minorities are good, because they are unsuccessful, and white is bad because they are successful. Asians are minorities too, but they are bad because they are even more successful than whites, so they should be discriminated against in college admissions also. But not all Asians are successful: some groups of Asians are unsuccessful, so they are still good. But all less-successful groups of whites are still bad because they are white. White people are always bad and wrong, but you can’t say that directly, because that might make you look racist (even though you are, but that’s OK, because it’s against whites, especially if you’re not white since technically non-whites cannot be racist anyway), which is even worse than being too successful.

THEIR TIME IN THE SUN IS OVER
If I were an investor in Facebook and saw this move, my translation would be: folks, we hit the end of the road here, we’re just looking to buy something, anything, to keep pretending we’re a company. What a complete waste of money. What does this Company do other than sell their own user’s private data without telling them?
Many people believe the world would have been a better place if Facebook had never existed, how about you?
