Alexandria Ocasio Cortez just got some bad news.

She is being challenged in the Democrat primary by an anchor from CNBC.

A female anchor.

A challenger who is Cuban and Italian and hopefully a lot less dingy.

Former CNBC anchor Michelle Caruso-Cabrera announced on Tuesday that she will challenge Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) in the Democratic primary for her seat in Congress.

“I am the daughter and granddaughter of working class Italian and Cuban immigrants,” Caruso-Cabrera said in a statement. “I am so lucky to have had such a wonderful career and I want everybody to have the opportunity that I’ve had. That’s why I’m running.”

Caruso-Cabrera has been with CNBC for more than two decades. The network said Tuesday she will no longer appear as a contributor on the network.

Ocasio-Cortez, 30, shocked the political world in 2018 in upsetting 10-term Democratic incumbent Joe Crowley in a Democratic primary for New York’s 14th district, which is located in the Bronx and Queens.

She has since amassed more followers on Twitter than any member of Congress with more than 6.3 million. For comparison, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), who has been in Congress for 33 years, has 3.9 million.  [The Hill]

Could she be the one to knock AOC off her gilded political perch?

It’s hard to say, but it’s a long-shot.

AOC has very strong name recognition. And while yes, she is a nimrod when it comes to politics, name recognition matters, especially with low-info Dem voters.

Sure, she’s being challenged by someone who has been on TV, but how many people watch boring CNBC on a daily basis?

A national poll back in June showed that AOC was recognized by 74% of voters in the poll and 22% had a favorable view and 52% have an unfavorable view.

Those national numbers are terrible.

But at home in her very blue district, AOC is much more popular. She has a war chest of over $3 million dollars (a lot of money for a House election in her district). She’ll be hard to primary.
