Given my job I have a chance to talk to a lot of candidates. As most of you know, I tend to be a tad cynical about them.

But I had an opportunity to talk to one recently, Nancy Mace- a Republican running in the SC 1st, that didn’t make me want to laugh out loud.

Far from it, this person is impressive.

Nancy Mace is an Army brat and the first female graduate of the tough as nails SC military school, The Citadel. She has been a successful businesswoman for over twenty years and is a GOP South Carolina state legislator in her second term. Mace wants to bring that perspective and leadership experience to the U.S. House. The institution could obviously use it.

And she knows what it’s like to work her way up. Mace waited tables at Waffle House on her way to building a solid career.

She’s running against Democrat incumbent Joe Cunningham in a district the president won by 13 points in 2016. So, she’s got more than a fair shot.

But, enough narrative. She can tell you about herself better than I can.

On the economy:

“When I make decisions on behalf of my constituents in the South Carolina legislature, I think about what it takes to balance a budget. As a single mom, I am reminded every day just exactly what that means; it means getting your hands dirty and doing the work – not passing the buck. That’s why I support plans to keep your taxes low, like President Trump’s tax cuts, and I’ll continue to support tax cuts that create jobs, prosperity and wealth for every American.”

On the president:

“I was honored to work for President Trump in seven states during the campaign, and I’m honored to help bring more new voters to the polls in November 2020 to keep South Carolina red.

This administration is fighting for us, the people, in renegotiating trade deals and standing up to bullies abroad. This starts with restoring sanity to our policy making processes.”

On the AOC-led Democrat “Squad.”:

Mace has formed her own conservative GOP Squad of Jessica Taylor of Alabama, Beth Van Duyne of Texas, and Michelle Fischbach of Minnesota.

“Our Squad is taking it to AOC, Ilhan Omar, Rashida Tlaib, and Ayanna Presley, the self-avowed socialists who want to eliminate your health care options, raise your taxes, and tear down the wall at our Southern border. They continue to spend their time in DC fighting tooth and nail to stand in the President’s way. Why? Because they simply hate Donald Trump.”

Why she is running:

“My entire life, whether in business or as a state lawmaker has always been about delivering results.

Unfortunately, our current SC-01 representation by Joe Cunningham is part of the problem. Cunningham votes less with the President than Nancy Pelosi and even AOC. When Nancy Pelosi needs him, he’s there. But when we, the Lowcountry, need him? Joe is nowhere to be found. It’s time to take back the Lowcountry.”

Not bad. Not bad at all.
