During a campaign stop in Iowa on Tuesday, 2020 Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden said that he would like to make Michelle Obama his vice president if he gets elected president. He made this comment after saying that he would love to appoint former President Barack Obama to the Supreme Court.
“Would you consider appointing Obama for the Supreme Court?” Biden was asked by someone in the crowd, according to The Washington Examiner [1].
“Yeah, I would, and I don’t think he’d do it. He’d be a great Supreme Court justice,” Biden replied.
“Second question is: Which Obama?” the man asked in response as the rest of the crowd applauded.
“Well, I sure would like Michelle to be the vice president,” Biden said with a laugh. “They’re both incredibly qualified people, I mean, and they’re such decent, honorable people.”
The campaign stop for Biden, 77, started almost an hour late, and he was not able to fill the room with the roughly 75 attendees who showed up. Undeterred by this, Biden used the campaign stop to slam the White House for the way it has defended Trump in the Senate impeachment trial.
“I found it strange yesterday that, in that Republican presentation they talked about, ‘Maybe Obama should have been impeached,'” Biden said. “I mean, like, you know, ‘Whoa.’ Anyway, but my point is, we even have some Democrats who were running who in 2012 thought that President Obama should be primaried. I thought he was a pretty good president, and I was proud to serve with him.”
Biden’s hopes of appointing Michelle as his Vice President comes after months of various liberals calling on her to run for president. Last summer, documentary filmmaker Michael Moore said that there is only one person who could “crush” Donald Trump in the election, “and her last name rhymes with Obama.”
“In fact, it is Obama — Michelle Obama,” Moore said, according to The Hill [2] . “Everybody watching this right now knows she is a beloved American and she would go in there and she would beat him.”
Michelle, however, has been adamant that she has no interest in politics.
“The reason why I don’t want to run for president — and I can’t speak for Oprah [Winfrey] — but my sense is that, first of all, you have to want the job,” Michelle said back in April, referring to rumors that Winfrey also might run. And you can’t just say, ‘Well, you’re a woman, run.’ We just can’t find the women we like and ask them to do it, because there are millions of women who are inclined and do have the passion for politics.”
“I’ve never had the passion for politics,” the former First Lady added, according to The Hollywood Reporter [3]. “I just happened to be married to somebody who has the passion for politics, and he drug me kicking and screaming into the arena.”
